External sound?

Hi, I am new to the forum and this might be an obvious answer, but she says that sound comes out of her ipod where you can hear what shes playing when she has her headphones plugged in? Is this normal, is there a way of turning off the external sound, and/or is this IPOD defective and needs to be returned. Its only 2 weeks old...
